When to take your Alaskan
Vacation
People often ask, "When
is the best time to fish?” It
all depends on your target species. As far as bottom fishing goes (halibut, ling
cod, red snapper, black bass), those species bite throughout the season. Large
halibut and trophy lingcod can be caught at any time.
We encourage our guests to book their vacation based on what salmon species
they wish to catch. May and June can bring large numbers of king salmon, averaging
18-25 lbs., with larger fish mixed in. This is a great time for those who just
like pulling in kings and don’t really care about silver salmon. You will find
yourself fishing the shallow-water kelp line or maybe chasing bird spots off
shore, finding halibut and kings mixed together.
July is a great month to catch silver salmon mixed with kings, adding more
action to your day. This time of year you never know what’s chewing on the end
of you line.
August brings the largest silvers of the year averaging 11-13 lbs. This is
a great time for the first-time angler to Alaska, and it’s a great time to bring
the kids. King salmon fishing starts tapering off by mid August, but anglers
still find themselves hooked up occasionally.
